Though HK and Taiwan were both productive, very few horror films were produced in mainland China during this time due to being banned by the government. The fall of Shaw Brothers in the middle of the decade didn't help matters either as they produced many of the best / craziest / most interesting genre films of the entire decade, like Bewitched, The Boxer's Omen, Seeding of a Ghost and others. Not that some of these aren't highly enjoyable, but it definitely wore out its welcome by the time 1990 rolled around. Vampire, the rest of the decade was dominated by comedies with fantasy and horror elements over serious genre films. Because of the box office success of things like The Happy Ghost and Mr. The first half of this decade is far more interesting to me personally because there's a wider variety of films dealing with a wider variety of topics and more films done in a serious manner. The good news about this list is that, unlike my previous lists featuring Thai, Indonesian and Mexican horror films, most of these aren't difficult to find and are available in English.
